It was the first car to be launched after BMW purchased Rolls-Royce in 1998. The Phantom VII was seen as the car that revived the Rolls-Royce brand and restored the manufacturers credibility in producing luxury cars. From 2003 the Phantom was the only car produced by Rolls-Royce until the launch of the smaller Ghost in 2009. The Phantom was the company’s flagship model, but was less exclusive at around 800 – 1000 units per year than all previous Phantoms of which not more than 600 units were produced per year. The Rolls-Royce Phantom was original designed with a 9.0l V16 engine in mind. BMW wanted the ultimate luxury car to have the ultimate engine however, the idea was later binned in favour of a “more economical” 6.75l V12.
